Do you have a servant’s heart?

Reading John 13:4-5 (KJV) it says:

4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

In John C. Maxwell‘s “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a leader“, he discusses Servanthood and shares a story:

Servanthood:  “You’ve got to love your people more than your position.”

  • Servanthood is not about position or skill.  It’s about attitude.
  • The truth is that the best leaders desire to serve others, not themselves.
  • Definition = Intentionally being aware of your people’s needs, available to help them, and able to accept their desires as important.
  • **The real heart of servanthood is security.  Show me someone who thinks he is too important to serve, and I’ll show you someone who is basically insecure.”
  • The Law of Empowerment says that only secure leaders give power to others.  It’s also true that only secure leaders exhibit servanthood.
  • Great leaders see the need, seize the opportunity, and serve without expecting anything in return.
  • It is true that those who would be great must be like the least and be the servant of all.

Just like you know when a team member doesn’t want to participate, you can tell if a leader has a servant’s heart.  Having a servant’s heart has no hidden agendas.  It’s all about being a servant to others and doing it out of love.  A leader who posses this quality doesn’t look for koodles, but has a genuine loving heart and concern for those around them.
